Background
How does pursuing an English major contribute to personal growth? |
Growing up as a child of immigrants, I realized I was different. Learning English was an internal struggle that was oftentimes framed by ridicule. As a consequence of being a child of immigrants, I couldn't speak the language until I was eight years old. It was a challenging period marked by ostracization. Not only was I already a marginalized minority, but I was also placed in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, which felt like bearing a scarlet letter.
Despite this challenge, it inspired me to learn and master this new language. It became my path to connect with others, make friends, and explore new interests. Through English, I found my way and built a foundation in a foreign setting. Its influence wasn't just personal; it extended to my family. My journey to fluency, as a nonnative speaker, became a source of passion and determination, fueled by the sacrifices and obstacles I overcame to understand and master this language. |
